About Me

Drummer | Educator | Musical Collaborator

Joel Oppong-Boateng is a versatile, energetic, and deeply musical drummer based in Ottawa, Canada. With over 15 years of experience behind the kit, Joel’s dynamic and expressive playing has earned him a reputation as a go-to drummer across genres like gospel, jazz, blues, hip-hop, and more. Joel began his musical journey at his home church in Ottawa, where he developed a deep passion for rhythm and groove. After years of being self-taught, he began formal training with acclaimed drummer Jamie Holmes, which led him to pursue a Bachelor of Music degree at Carleton University. In 2023, he was awarded the Friends of the National Arts Centre Orchestra Award, recognizing his musical excellence and leadership. Throughout his career, Joel has worked with a wide range of artists including Daphne Richardson, JW-Jones, Ed Lister, William McDowell, Afolake, Sean Feucht, Ryan Ofei, Kojo Dave, and John Kofi Dapaah. His touring experience includes North American and European runs, with highlights such as the Gratitude Tour and sharing the stage with blues legend Buddy Guy in Chicago. He was also part of the Ottawa Jazz Youth Summit, opening for the legendary Herbie Hancock. Whether in the studio or on stage, Joel brings a powerful yet sensitive approach to the music. He thrives in any setting — from jazz clubs to church stages — blending precision with feel, and always playing with purpose. His ability to read music, adapt to diverse styles, and stay locked into the moment sets him apart as a true professional. In addition to performing, Joel is passionate about education. He offers private drum lessons to students of all levels, helping others unlock their potential through rhythm and discipline. Inspired by greats like Calvin Rodgers, Stanley Randolph, Bill Stewart, and Elvin Jones, Joel’s mission is simple: to bless others with his gift and reflect Christ through both his music and his life. For him, music isn’t just something he chose — it chose him.
